Twiggy, a 2-year-old dog, has become a beacon of hope and resilience after surviving a gunshot wound and making a remarkable recovery from severe injuries.
Her journey began when the Humane Society of North Texas (HSNT) rescued her on November 4, following a negotiated release.

Upon arriving at HSNT, Twiggy’s condition was dire. She was extremely frail, infested with fleas and parasites, and suffering from both heartworms and whipworms. Despite her “heartbreaking” physical state, her spirit remained unbroken.
During her initial examination, the medical team noticed swelling under her jaw. Although there were no visible wounds, the swelling suggested a deeper issue.
At that time, Twiggy was also battling a severe upper respiratory infection, preventing immediate sedation for further examination. The team administered antibiotics and closely monitored her as she began to regain strength.
Once Twiggy was strong enough for sedation, radiographs revealed a shocking discovery: a bullet and a tooth fragment lodged in her jaw, likely causing her immense pain for weeks or even months.
This hidden trauma heightened the urgency of her situation. The veterinary team at HSNT stepped up, surgically removing the bullet and tooth fragment.
This procedure provided Twiggy with much-needed relief and marked a crucial turning point in her recovery journey.
“Throughout her recovery, Twiggy has shown nothing but love and gratitude,” said the organization. Her unshaken trust in humans, despite her traumatic past, quickly endeared her to the HSNT staff.
As her condition improved, Twiggy began to heal not just physically but emotionally as well. Now, with “a second chance at life,” she eagerly waits for a family who will truly cherish her.
