The Thin Blue Paw Foundation recently announced that over $13,000 was raised for a retired police dog’s crucial surgery following severe spinal damage.
The German Shepherd, named Captain, served with West Midlands Police for three years before retiring in 2022 due to a ligament injury in his leg, which led to spine issues.
The charity expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of support for the surgery.
On September 3, the foundation thanked donors who raised over $13,000 (£10,000) within 24 hours for Captain’s life-saving spinal surgery. The dog had retired two years ago after sustaining multiple injuries during his service.
BBC reported that Captain “ruptured his cruciate ligament in a leg, with spinal problems emerging thereafter.” The foundation attributed his injuries to “strenuous days patrolling the streets and chasing and detaining suspects.” Captain’s owner, PC Marcus Cottrell, described him as “fearsome yet extremely sociable.”
Since Captain’s 2022 retirement, the charity has supported him with hydrotherapy sessions and veterinary consultations.
Cottrell recalled Captain’s impressive service record, including detaining numerous criminals and locating suspects and weapons.
Facing a £7,500 bill for Captain’s spinal surgery, the foundation created an online fundraiser. They aimed to provide Captain with the best chance at a “long and happy, comfortable retirement.” Remarkably, supporters raised over £10,000 in less than a day.
Cottrell expressed his gratitude, saying, “Captain has always been a superstar, but I am overwhelmed by the outpouring of love, support, and generosity shown by supporters of the Thin Blue Paw Foundation, friends, family, colleagues, and members of the public, some of whom have commented that they have met Captain. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
The charity noted that any excess funds would go towards supporting other retired police dogs.
