A heart-melting Instagram video from user @spudsymutt shows how a rescue dog named Spud slowly warms up to four tiny baby chicks.
His owners introduce the chicks as “our new spring additions to our current flock.” At the start, Spud keeps a careful distance. He looks curious and a little unsure about the fluffy newcomers.
As the clip goes on, though, it becomes clear that the chicks begin to win him over.
The video captures Spud watching the brooder closely, trying to figure out what is happening inside. Soon, his curiosity turns into something much sweeter.
Before long, the Pit Bull starts acting like a proud parent. He stands guard near the chicks and checks on them often. By the end of the clip, Spud looks like a full-time dad to the tiny birds.

One detail surprised the rescue Pit Bull’s owner the most. The chicks seem to trust Spud more than anyone else.
In the caption, the owner shared, “So funny enough, as much as I tried to bond with the chicks, they have become pretty skittish of us. Yet when Spud is anywhere near them, they’re perfectly fine.”
There is a simple reason this kind of bond can happen. When a dog meets a new family member and experiences repeated calm moments, their alert nature can slowly turn into a protective one.
For Spud, watching over a quiet brooder seems to be the perfect job.
Spud also takes his new role very seriously. His owner explained in the caption, “Any time he hears them in any sort of distress (giant hand changing out their water,) Spud comes running from the next room!”
